Dear ATA Families,

I am thrilled to introduce myself as your new principal. My name is Misael Flores Gutiérrez (your children will know me as Dr. G) and I cannot wait to begin this incredible journey with you and your children. 

I bring nearly 20 years of experience in education to ATA, and my passion for supporting students runs deep. Throughout my career, I have worn many hats: instructional assistant, special education teacher, dean of students, athletic director, track and field coach, and district leader. In 2023, I received the incredible honor of being appointed by Dr. Charlene Williams, Director of the Oregon Department of Education, to serve as her strategic advisor. This role opened my eyes in amazing ways. I led some governor initiatives, traveled across our beautiful state, and visited schools in communities large and small. Every visit taught me something new, and the experience humbled me beyond words. 

So why did I decide to return to a school building as principal? Simple. I missed being around children every day and having that immediate, tangible impact on their lives. The state-level work was meaningful, but nothing compares to seeing a student's face light up when they learn a new concept or watch them grow in confidence throughout the school year.

When I'm not at school, I cherish time with my beautiful family. My partner Katie works in education at the University of Oregon, and we have two amazing daughters: Maya, who is 4 and full of curiosity about everything, and Hannah, who is 2 and keeps us all on our toes. 

I am genuinely excited about the school year ahead of us. Together, we will create an environment where creativity flourishes, critical thinking develops, and every student discovers their unique strengths. The combination of arts and technology provides such rich opportunities for learning, and I cannot wait to see what our students will create and accomplish.

Mi nombre es Misael Flores Gutiérrez (sus hijos me conocerán como Dr. G) y soy su nuevo director.

Tengo casi 20 años de experiencia en educación, y mi pasión por apoyar a los estudiantes es profunda. A lo largo de mi carrera, he sido un asistente de instrucción, maestro de educación especial, director de deportes, y líder en el distrito escolar. En 2023, recibí el honor de ser nombrado por la Dra. Charlene Williams, Directora del Departamento de Educación de Oregon, para servir como su asesor estratégico. Este trabajo me dio la oportunidad de ver cosas diferentes, de maneras increíbles. Dirigí iniciativas del gobernador, viaje por todo el estado y puede visitar comunidades grandes y pequeñas. Cada visita me enseño algo nuevo y fue una gran experiencia de humildad.

Entonces, ¿por qué decidí regresar a su escuela como director? Simple. Extrañaba estar cerca de los niños todos los días y tener ese impacto inmediato y tangible en sus vidas. El trabajo en el estado fue muy especial, pero nada se compara con ver la cara de un estudiante iluminarse cuando aprende un nuevo concepto o verlos crecer en confianza a lo largo del año escolar.

Cuando no estoy en la escuela, paso mi tiempo con mi hermosa familia. Mi pareja Katie trabaja en educación en la Universidad de Oregon, y tenemos dos hijas increíbles: Maya, que tiene 4 años y está llena de curiosidad, y Hannah, que tiene 2 años y nos mantiene a todos alerta.

Estoy emocionado por el año escolar que tenemos por delante. Juntos, crearemos un ambiente donde la creatividad florezca, el pensamiento crítico se desarrolle, y cada estudiante descubra sus fortalezas únicas. Dear ATA Families,

My name is Steve Tygart, I’ll go by Mr. Tygart or Tygart at school, and I am excited to be joining such a vibrant and creative school community. It is an absolute pleasure to introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal at ATA. 

I’ve been in education for over eight years. I began as a health, math, and science instructor in a special education program, have had many and various leadership roles, and most recently I was the Student Success Coordinator at my last school. I bring a student-centered, inclusive approach to every aspect of school life. Before my path in education, I spent 15 years in the biotech industry, which gave me a strong foundation in inquiry and problem-solving—skills I now love helping students develop.

In the broader Eugene community I’ve taught yoga for the past 11 years. This continues to shape my belief in the importance of balance, mindfulness, and resilience in learning. My goal is always to support students not just academically, but as whole people.

My connection to this area has deep roots. My wife Jami and I are both educators and both University of Oregon and Pacific University alumni. Our four children all attended and graduated from 4J schools. As well, I have lived within or near the ATA boundaries for much of my life in Eugene. 

Outside of school, I enjoy traveling, spending time with family, and exploring the outdoors. I look forward to collaboration with our dedicated staff, connection with families, and supporting every student in reaching their full potential.

Mi nombre es Steve Tygart, me pueden llamar Sr. Tygart or Tygart en la escuela. Estoy emocionado de unirme a una comunidad escolar tan vibrante y creativa. Es un placer presentarme como el nuevo Subdirector de ATA.

Tengo más de ocho años de experiencia en educación. Comencé como instructor de salud, matemáticas y ciencias en un programa de educación especial, he tenido muchos y diversos roles de liderazgo, y más recientemente fui el Coordinador de Éxito Estudiantil en mi última escuela. Traigo un enfoque centrado en el estudiante e inclusivo a todos los aspectos de la vida escolar. Antes de mi camino en la educación, pasé 15 años en la industria biotecnológica, lo cual me dio una base sólida en investigación y resolución de problemas—habilidades que ahora me encanta ayudar a desarrollar a los estudiantes.

En la comunidad de Eugene he enseñado yoga durante los últimos 11 años. Esto continúa moldeando mi creencia en la importancia del equilibrio, la atención plena y la resistencia en el aprendizaje. Mi objetivo es siempre apoyar a los estudiantes no solo académicamente, sino como personas completas.

Mi conexión con esta área tiene raíces profundas. Mi esposa Jami y yo somos ambos educadores y ambos egresados de la Universidad de Oregon y la Universidad del Pacífico. Nuestros cuatro hijos todos asistieron y se graduaron de las escuelas 4J. Además, he vivido dentro o cerca de los límites de ATA durante gran parte de mi vida en Eugene. Fuera de la escuela, disfruto viajar, pasar tiempo con la familia y explorar la naturaleza.
