What a first week! Walking through our halls this week, I've seen so many smiles, so much excitement, and that unmistakable energy that comes with a fresh school year. It's been wonderful getting to see our students reconnect with friends, meet new teachers, and settle back into the rhythm of school life.
For our new families, welcome to the ATA community. My name is Misael Flores Gutierrez, and I'm honored to serve as your principal. Around here, students just call me Dr. G.
So Much to Explore
One of the things I'm most excited about this year is the incredible range of electives we're able to offer our students: Yearbook, Team Sports, Drama, Explore Art, Explore Spanish, BuildIT, Web Design, Digital Art, Robotics, Band, Choir, Creative Writing, Explore Music, HandiCrafts, and more. There truly is something for every student to discover and love.
Beyond electives, I'm proud to say we host the strongest middle school mentorship program in the district. Every Thursday, community members and University of Oregon students come to campus during lunch to eat, hang out, and mentor our students. It's one of the most meaningful parts of our school culture.
The Lockers Thrift Store
Last year, we launched The Lockers, a thrift store for our students, and this year we've expanded it with an even better selection of cool and vintage clothing. The Lockers is open during Flex time, and best of all, it's completely free for students.
Welcoming New Staff
We're also excited to welcome several new members to our ATA family this year! Please join us in giving a warm welcome to:
-
Teresa Barrington — 7th Grade PE/Health
-
Eric Wade — 7th Grade Math
-
Patrick Easterwood — Life Skills Teacher
-
Sheila Rodrigo — Kitchen Coordinator
We're thrilled to have their energy, expertise, and passion joining our team this year, and we know our students and families will love getting to know them. Welcome to ATA!
What Makes ATA Special
If you ask me what truly sets ATA apart, it's our staff. They are the heart of our school's climate and culture. Last year, our student climate survey told us what we hoped was true: students feel safe, valued, cared for, and welcomed here. That means the world to me, and my goal this year is to keep building on that foundation so every student continues to feel that way.
Stay Connected
We have a lot happening this month, so please keep an eye on our school calendar for the latest updates and events. Finally, even though we're just getting started, please know our doors are always open. Several of you have already reached out with questions, and I love that. Please don't hesitate to stop by, call, or send us an email anytime.
